University of Ilorin, Unilorin Plans Hostel Accommodation for Additional 5,000 students
The management of the University of Ilorin has concluded arrangements with a private company, Origin Group to build additional 2,500 room-hostel with 5,000 bed-space capacity to ease the acute shortage of hostel accommodation on campus.
Speaking during a meeting with representatives of the company in his office last Monday (December 21, 2015), the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), said that the idea of engaging private developers was principally to move a larger percentage of the students into the campus.
Prof. Ambali explained that the University could only effectively and efficiently instill moral and academic discipline in its students if the students are within the confines of the campus.
He maintained that Unilorin gives a priority attention to sound and qualitative education so that its students would be found worthy both in learning and character.
The Vice-Chancellor added that this informed the University’s plan to build another set of modern hostel accommodation under the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) arrangement in the interest of the students.
Prof. Ambali explained that the BOT arrangement was in line with the Federal Government’s standing rules that stipulate that developers can build, operate and transfer the ownership of the building to the University authority after 21 years of operation.
The Vice-Chancellor, therefore, advised the management of Origin Group to be strategic in its approach and come up with standard structures that would stand the test of time.
He urged the company not to compromise standard and endeavour to ensure that the project is completed and ready for use by September next year to enable students make use of the structure upon their resumption for the 2016/2017 academic session in October next year.
In his comment, the Chief Executive Officer of Origin Group, Chief S. J. Samuel, explained that the cardinal objective of his company was identifying and solving problems in all aspects of human endeavours. He added that the company had decided to address the accommodation deficit at the University of Ilorin with the provision of 2,500 rooms with 5,000 bed spaces capacity.
Chief Samuel disclosed that work would begin on the project by March next year and gave assurance that the project would be completed in September next year as requested by the school management.
