Osun State Poly Rector Wants Buhari To End B.Sc. HND Dichotomy
The Rector of the Osun State Polytechnic,
Iree, Dr. Jacob Agboola, has charged the
President-elect, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari,
to quickly end the dichotomy between
university and polytechnic education in the
country on assumption of office.
He argued that skills acquired in polytechnics are far better than that of universities but is still amazed that university graduates are rated above polytechnic graduates.
Agboola stated that no country can develop
without the recognition of skills acquired by
polytechnic graduates through technical
education.
It will be recalled that the Committee on
the Social Sector of the National
Conference held in Abuja had
recommended the removal of the
dichotomy on university/polytechnic
graduates.
The recommendation was made during
plenary at the conference by the Chairman
of the Committee, Iyom Josephine Anenih
while presenting the report of the
committee.
In her words: “There is a disparity in the cut-
off of entry score into universities and other
types of tertiary institutions, with
universities requiring higher scores. Despite
this, most candidates prefer universities,
probably because of the difference in status
and salary accorded university graduates as
against those of other institutions.
“Graduates of Polytechnics and similar
specialized tertiary institutions are geared
towards practical-oriented education than
universities.
“Each type of institution therefore has
different mandates in terms of preparing
graduates for society. Given this
understanding, both institutions should be
adequately equipped and funded to achieve
their goals”, he said.
Reacting to the recommendation, delegate
representing Ondo State, led by Prof. Femi
Mimiko, opposed the removal of the
dichotomy warning that it will pose a wrong
question.
Prof. Mimiko said that what is important is
making sure each institution perfects what
it is set out to achieve as they have different
purposes and objectives.
