About NLNG Scholarships

What the Nigeria LNG Scholarship Scheme is all about

The NLNG Scholarship Scheme aims to build capacity in areas where NLNG’s host communities and the rest of Nigeria experience significant skills gaps, especially, but not exclusively, within the oil and gas industry. The Scheme is part of NLNG’s Community Development Programme which aims to contribute to long-term socio-economic development in communities where we operate and Nigeria at large.

Why Nigeria LNG gives out these scholarships

We want to ensure that the success of the oil and gas industry brings real, lasting benefits to the people and economies of the communities/country in which we operate. Our Community Development Programme is focused on investing in education and capacity building so that members of our host communities can participate in our industry and other industries to support economic diversification. The scholarship scheme will support this agenda by helping to increase the number of people with expertise in relevant fields of study in our host communities and Nigeria at large.

About the 4 Scholarships Offered by NLNG to Nigerian Students

Nigeria LNG Limited supports education through several initiatives. One of them is Scholarships. NLNG has a four-tier scholarship programme which channels support for human capital development and encourage high performance, ultimately growing a pool of high potential students, graduates and professionals with competitive advantage.

1. NLNG Post Primary Scholarship

The scheme aims at supporting very high performing but underprivileged basic six pupils in host communities’ public schools in accessing top-of-the-range education in top-rate secondary schools in Nigeria. The scheme kicked off in 2012 with 28 beneficiaries in two partner schools, Brookstone Secondary School, Igwuruta and Charles Dale Memorial International School, Eneka, Port Harcourt. Other partner schools are MacDonald Memorial International Institute, Igwuruta, Port Harcourt, Dowen College Lekki, Lagos and Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja.

Prospective pupils will have to pass through a merit based selection process independently conducted by the Aptitude Test Department (ATD) of WAEC to qualify for the scholarship. We have 58 beneficiaries on the scheme as at December, 2013.

2. NLNG Undergraduate Scholarship

A total of 2,600 undergraduates from various universities in Nigeria have benefited from the scholarship scheme and over N500 million spent on it. The introduction of online application and use of social media (Facebook) for information dissemination in 2012 made the selection process more efficient and cost effective, increased awareness and minimized rumours.

The value of the scholarship has been reviewed upward from N100, 000 to N300, 000 per awardee for an academic year and it runs throughout the duration of the course. We have 2,700 beneficiaries as at December, 2013.

3. NLNG Overseas Post Graduate Scholarship
